Internet Kills the Oxford English Dictionary
The next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary will never be printed due to internet’s impact on book sales. This, after 21 years of work by a team of 80 lexicographers.
I don’t know if this is good or bad news, but I do have the strong feeling that it’ll be a dark day if the internet becomes out only “reliable” source of information. However, one can understand why the sales dropped. People always bought dictionaries because they had to, and not because they really wanted. And now almost all is available for free online, and it’s fresh and updated frequently. The quality is anther question…
